Eighteen months ago I started this blog with high hopes that I would make money off the Internet. Although I’ve made friends because of this blog and had a great time exploring Denver, I’ve spent at least $2,000 and have earned $11 (plus tax deductions). I want to use the time I spend exploring Denver and writing these posts to forward my ideas in other areas. So for now, this is the last post.

I’m debating whether to set up a city site about Denver as the first of many such sites about cities I visit. If I did, I would copy the review posts to that site and gussy them up a bit with SEO. I don’t see the point of taking everything off this site and breaking all the links I’ve spent 18 months getting, though, so the old reviews will stay here.

I’m also thinking of turning this site into a photography blog. That’s my passion now, and it’s been finding its way into posts here and there, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.

Whatever I decide to do, I need a break from writing posts. I’ll be using the time to recharge and catch up on all your doings, which I’ve been neglecting.

Have a great weekend. Spring is on the way.

Hi Beth, just as I return to blogging, I see that you’re leaving. I totally understand, I’ve wrestled with similar issues.

Doing what you do here I expect you already know this guy Steve Sherron</em who writes about hyperlocal blogging? Thought I’d mention it just on case you haven’t.

    Good luck Beth,
    Dave 🙂

Dave, thanks for the comment. I’m not actually leaving blogging permanently; I just need to do something else with the time I’m spending on this one. Thanks for the mention of Steve Sherron.

Thanks, Tracie. I haven’t given up on Denver yet. I just went to a couple of restaurants and wrote reviews of them, but I’m not going to post anything for now. I need a break. I’m thinking of creating a static site at some time.

Dave, for now I’m blogging at Restoration Nation, but I’m still working on the concept for that site. The URL is http://restorationnation.org.

A photoblog would be great, I love looking at your pictures. It’s shocking how much time well written posts take, or so I’ve been told 🙂

I know they take me a lot of time–even the ones that aren’t so well written! I may also try my hand at a gallery, but I don’t know anything about those plug-ins at this point.

Oh boy, now I feel guilty about not responding to your lovely writing! And you commented on my blog quite often. We talked a little bit about this the other night at the Boulder Bookstore—how blog networking really only works if you respond to each other. But the trouble is that you would be on the internet all day long…I’m just writing to the void and basically it’s for myself, to keep myself writing. If someone learns something or takes something positive away from it, then that’s great. I have to say, the times I did read your blog, I always came away from it feeling I had learned something! Enjoy your new-found passion and I hope to see you at many more readings!

Barbara, don’t feel guilty! It’s possible to build a readership without being on the Internet all day long–you could probably do an hour a day, or an hour 3 days a week, and get a lot of readers. It does take time to find people who are really interested in what you say. But this blog isn’t going away–I’ve decided to change it up a bit, that’s all. And I’m still enjoying my break.

I was so busy getting ready for my recent research trip, going on the trip, and catching up after… that I missed this announcement! I think your blog has been delightful, and these last couple of photos were a hoot. “Cold Shower/Quiet Area”? I love it. I do understand your decision, though, and I wish you the best on whatever this endeavor morphs into next.

I do hope that someday I might make direct money from my blog, but mine is more of an indirect endeavor: it helps me keep up my writing practice, and it allows me to create an audience for other writing that I hope will contribute to my income. If it weren’t for those goals, I might have trouble justifying the expenditure of time and money. Like you, I also enjoy the friends I’ve discovered, but hey, we still need to pay the bills.

Let me know if you decide to set up a city site about Denver, so I can post a link. I love to keep my readers informed about interesting stuff to see and do here in Denver, as well as around the rest of the country and the world. Keep in touch… and hey, I hope to see you at the Lighthouse Lit Fest!

Wait a second Beth, I had always thought this was a photography blog! Well, a photo/restaurant/store review blog… Well, just keep posting pics of my old city and I’m happy.

Saint, I’ll do that. I’m about ready to start it up again–need to change the theme and such. And upgrade–shiver! Upgrading WordPress is always a little scary.
