Beth -- Thanks for the tip. I changed that setting so that anyone can comment -- no Google account required.

I look forward to following more of your travels.

Mary, thanks for stopping by. I just left a comment on your blog. I wish I could sign in by another name than my Google account, though.

It's pretty close to downtown, so maybe you can check it out the next time you're in Denver.

We had something similar in our area, Bernard, involving a fitness center within walking distance of my house. The owner decided to try to sell but couldn't manage it for years. As a result, a number of people lost jobs and the building sat empty until last year, when it was turned into offices.

I wonder if the mall owners learned their lesson? Or did they manage to make more money with half the places rented? There must be some reason besides stupidity for property owners to do these things.

Very Nice. I often wonder the same thing about how small shops make it. We had a thriving little mall in our area, with many small specialty shops carving a niche and probably just making it. The mall owners raised their lease rates exorbitantly. They also broke promises about not renting to chains while their present tenants operated Mom & Pop places. Half the mall was empty for a decade. Overhead is the killer.

I would think so too, but I have no idea how much labor costs are, and from the picture on the wall, they definitely have more than 1 employee. So I think the wedding cakes and such must bring in a lot of money.

I often wonder the same thing about how these places stay open. I guess if the owner runs it, and maybe only hires one other person if even, it's a pretty low labor overhead. Then you just have to pay the rent (400 dollars a day would easily cover that), materials, and your own living. $8,000 a month would be reasonable to keep that going, I would think.
