In Denver’s South Platte River Valley neighborhood, around the corner from Paris on the Platte and right next to Colt and Grey at 16th and Platte, there is a courtyard leading west to a bridge over I-25 Buildings with bridge over I25 Denver Oct 2009and east to a bridge over the South Platte River, Commons Park, and downtown Denver. Next to the bridge is a partial amphitheater that looks like a skateboarder’s dream except for the strategically placed ridges on the seats. The theater surrounds this rather blobulent piece of public art, “Red Velvet” by John McEnroe.Red Velvet 16th and Platte Denver Oct 2009

The best part of the courtyard is the circular ramp enabling access to the bridge. Courtyard with cyclist ramp to I25 bridge Denver Oct 2009I sat there and watched cyclists whiz up and down and around it, coming to and from this bridge leading to the Highland neighborhood.16th Street Bridge over I25 Denver Oct 2009

I saw ‘red velvet’ and was hoping for cake – but the sculpture is … interesting.

Looks like it’s oozing, doesn’t it? Or like it might stick out multiple tongues at you.

“Blobulent”? Where in the world did you get a word like that? Oh, wait, it must have been from me. Where in the world did I get a word like that? Can you guess? Hint: it came from the same brain as the word “plook”.

sigh, i can’t stand Denver public art. Except for maybe the Mustang. And the giant sweep, as it’s appropriately placed next to the Civic Center Park.

That’s pretty much how I feel, Saint. Except for the orange geometric sculpture by the art museum, whose name I can’t recall.
